Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships for Citizens of Developing Commonwealth Countries

The benefit of being a distant learner is more comprehensive than you, as an undergraduate or graduate student, can imagine. Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships are offered for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries. This scholarship scheme was initiated by the UK Department for International Development with the purpose of contributing to the UK’s international development aims, backing up excellence in UK higher education.

The scholarship scheme supports distance learning Master’s degree courses offered in partnership with local providers in developing countries and courses offered directly by UK universities. The applying process this year had three stages:

1. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC) invited expressions of interest from UK universities who wished to partake in the scholarship program scheme.

2. The CSC welcomed formal proposals from shortlisted universities deciding which online courses to select and the number of scholarships allocated to each course.

3. The CSC selected candidates for the scholarship program from a list of shortlisted candidates nominated by each participating university.

Who was eligible to apply for this scholarship program scheme? Citizens of developing Commonwealth countries, refugees, or British protected persons permanently residents in a developing Commonwealth country. Additionally, students had to hold a first degree of at least upper second class standard to be considered eligible.
