University of Warwick Adopts an Empowering Attitude Towards Refugees and Asylum Seeking Students

University of Warwick is pleased to announce its new scholarship scheme aimed to support refugees, humanitarian protection and asylum seeking students in the UK. The scholarships offered are part of the Warwick Sanctuary Scholarships dedicated to Ph.D. students only. The University of Warwick is based on the outskirts of the city of Coventry renowned as the “City of Sanctuary”. Coventry is dedicated to building a culture of hospitality and welcome for those seeking protection from war and persecution. Consequently, the university is committed to educating students admitting that the opportunities to learn diminish greatly when people are forced to flee their homes.

How much refugees and asylum seeking students can receive?  

The university offers up to 5 fully funded postgraduate scholarships as follows. Up to 3 scholarships are offered to support Postgraduate Taught students who are looking to start their masters at Warwick in October 2018 and 2 scholarships to support Postgraduate Research.

The Postgraduate Taught Scholarships cover the full cost of tuition fees for the 2018/2019 academic year and a stipend of £14,800 for full time award holders.  Unlike the Postgraduate Taught Scholarship which is awarded for one year, the Postgraduate Research Scholarship is awarded for up to 3.5 years and will cover the full cost of tuition fees and a stipend of £14,800 for full time award holders.

How do they know of they are eligible?    

First of all, it is highly important that students hold one of the following statuses as granted by the UK government and/or are supported by CARA (the Council for At-Risk Academic): Humanitarian Protection, Full refugee status or Asylum Seeker. Second of all, entrants for both programs must be looking to study full time postgraduate course at the University for the 2018 academic year.

How will the scholarships be awarded?  

They are merit-based scholarships; however the submission must be accompanied by a supporting statement which will be offered by the prospective department.

How can students apply for the Warwick Postgraduate scholarships?
