Japanese Government Scholarships for International Undergraduate Students

It is no wonder that citizens of the world are awed to the Japanese culture.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) extends its helping hands to international student who wants to experience Japanese undergraduate education. Numerous universities also extend their helping hands to future Japanese Government Scholars. You can choose either social sciences and humanities or natural sciences as a field of study.

Do you have what it takes to be a Japanese Government Scholar?

You should be a citizen of a country which has diplomatic relations with Japan. Japanese citizens are ineligible for the program. If you hold dual citizenship and Japan is one of your citizenship, you may still apply as long as long as you will give up your Japanese citizenship by the date you arrive in Japan to retain your another citizenship. For that matter, your residency should be outside Japan. You must be born between the dates of April 2, 1996 to April 1, 2001. You should have completed a 12 years of school education or expected to complete such by March 2018. If you wish to enroll for the autumn term through direct placement, you should complete your education by August 2018. You should complete at least a high school equivalent credential or expected to complete it by 2018 unless if you are desiring to go through direct placement. If your qualification is different to what are described earlier, your educational background should meet the Japanese standard for an academic attainment suitable for enrolment. You should be willing to learn the Japanese language and fully appreciate and understand the Japanese culture. You be will required to complete your study using the Japanese language. You should submit a health certificate manifesting your health fitness to study in Japan. If your application is successful, the Japanese diplomatic mission in your country should issue a student visa in compliance of Japanese immigration law.

Applicant screening will be conducted at the Japanese diplomatic mission in the applicant’s country

Things to do

You need to submit all the required documents to the Japanese diplomatic mission office such as the Japanese Embassy of your country before the deadline. You need to coordinate at your country’s Japanese embassy or consulate general for details on the requirements and schedules specifically for your country. Deadline of application varies from country to country.

The Perks

The Japanese government is willing to pay for your tuition fees. The government will also provide you an allowance of 117,000 yen per month with an additional monthly stipend of 2,000 to 3,000 yen for those undertaking study or research in a specially designated regions and travel allowances. The benefits will last for five your which covers the entire period to complete your degree and the one-year preparatory education of the Japanese language. For this year, the scholarship period will start from April 2018 to March 2023.
