DAAD Scholarships in Germany for Development-Related Postgraduate Courses

The DAAD postgraduate scholarships in Germany are encouraging international students to think big and bright about their academic future. The scholarships are dedicated to foreign students from development countries, as well as from industrialized countries the chance to undertake a Master’s degree at one of the most reputable German universities or, in exceptional cases to undertake a Ph.D. degree in order to obtain a university qualification in Germany.

The duration and value of DAAD scholarships

The duration of DAAD scholarships is 12 to 24 month, depending on the academic institution where the student was admitted and 36 months for a Ph.D. awardee. The scholarship for Master studies is valued at 750 euros whereas the scholarship for doctoral studies is valued at 1000 euros.

The scholarships’ amounts cover payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover, travel allowance in case the home country of the awardee or another funding source cannot cover them.

The fields of study where DAAD scholarships are awarded

The following fields of study are taken into consideration for the DAAD scholarships:

  • Masters or PhD courses in Economic Sciences/ Business Administration/ Political Economics;
  • Development Cooperation;
  • Engineering and Related Sciences;
  • Mathematics;
  • Regional and Urban Planning;
  • Agricultural and Forest Sciences;
  • Natural and Environmental Sciences;
  • Medicine and Public Health;
  • Social Sciences, Education and Law;
  • Media Studies.

The eligibility criterions based on which the DAAD scholarships are awarded

Students considered eligible are those with at least two years’ professional experience who have worked either for a public or a private company in a developing country and were engaged in the planning and execution of projects from technological, economic or social areas.

Students considered eligible are those who hold a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in a related subject. The academic programs can be held either in German or English. Because the DAAD scholarships includes a 6-month German language course, the applicants are required to have a DSH 2 or TestDaF 4 at the beginning of the study course or a German language level of A2 at the time of application.

Students who opt for courses in English are required to hold a IELTS (Band 6) certificate or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 paper based, 213 computer based, 80 internet based. The application process

Except for the applicants from Cameroon who have to submit their scholarship request via the German Embassy, all other applicants will have to submit their scholarship applications directly to the chosen course. As well, they will find when the closing date is established individually for each course.

Deadline varies depending on the course but falls around August-October 2017.
